Fact Practice
Building Basic Facts Automaticity
This year, all students in FCPS are going to be spending time daily learning and practicing math facts for a few minutes each day. Students will continue to work on these facts until they have mastered all the facts. A fact is mastered when it can be answered in 3 seconds.
Learning all the facts in a given operation is a lot of work, but future success in math is dependent upon fact automaticity.
How can you help?
You can help by sharing with your child the importance of learning math facts and supporting daily practice. I will be sure to keep you notified of you child's success in this important learning task.
Word Sort
Open Sort- Students sort their weekly words without using the pattern categories. They look at the words and sort them by what they think they have in common.
Controlled Sort- Students use the pattern categories to sort the work. Students say the word, spell the word, then say the category it belongs to.
Blind Sort- Someone calls out the word and without looking at the word the student writes the word in the correct column. Students says the word, then write the word in the correct category.
Pattern Hunt- Students look in the at home reading books and find words that fit into their weekly categories. Students should say the word, spell the word then write the new word into the correct category.
During word sort it is very important for the students to
1. Pronounce the word
2. Spell the word
3. Say the category it belongs to
during each sort.

Here is what a controlled word sort should look like.
Great way to assist your child during a Blind Sort. (Our blind sorts are usually done on Wednesday.)
